Theory (Greek θεωρία) – as scientists now declare, a doctrine, a system of ideas or principles. A more precise meaning of the word is to some extent preserved in Dahl’s dictionary, where theory means: speculation, inference; conclusion, conclusion from something, but not by the appearance in practice, but by its conclusions.
In ancient Greece, from where theorizing through medieval philosophers has come down to our time, the word θεωρία meant the divine revelation of the soothsayers, received in ecstasy from the drugs taken.
From Plutarch, who for several years presided as a high-status priest in Delphi, information was received about the prophecies of the Pythia. He stated that the prophecies are associated with the vapor of spring waters flowing under the temple of Apollo. At the end of the 20th century, archaeologists did not find any crevices at the site of the ruins of the sanctuary at Delphi and no conditions for the formation of any natural gas causing hallucinations.
